Help us help The Reading Room

Over the past years, MANZA has worked with a number of charities endeavouring to make a difference to people’s lives. One of the charities has been The Reading Room, located in Kajang. The Reading Room is run by an amazing woman called Susie Devaki and she has asked us if we can put a message out to our members as they are in a fairly dire state due to COVID and the effect that this has had on their fund-raising abilities which supports their ongoing needs.

Unfortunately due to our own circumstances in MANZA, we are not currently able to provide financial support, as we were doing, but hopefully that will change as 2021 progresses.

For those who aren’t aware of what Susie does at The Reading Room, the facility focuses on caring for local children before and after school whose parents work or are marginalised in caring for them in some way. Children receive additional tuition – as they would generally attend daily school, and a daily meal. However, since March last year, they have been bringing students to the centre to help them to do their school work – online classes – and provide food. They are then sent back early in the afternoon and the centre brings another group of students who stay until later in the day. Due to the current restrictions, they are bringing in 10 students for 2 hours and they are socially distanced whilst there studying. They are currently trying to cover 40 students a day which is almost half the number they would generally assist, and this is of course due to the COVID restrictions however, lack of funds is a major concern.

Following is a list of monthly requirements so that The Reading Room can continue to operate. Food items are a priority however equally important are financial donations. If anyone can assist with food items or with financial donations, no matter how large or small, it would be gratefully appreciated.

Rent: RM850 pm
Food costs amount to RM1,800 pm (see list below of food items)
Transportation – this is collecting and transporting the students: RM700 pm
Bills: RM300 pm
Utilities: RM150 pm
Salaries: RM1,500 x 2 pm -= RM3,000 pm

To hopefully assist with gathering food donations ONLY and then taking them down to The Reading Room, we will be at MANZA House next WEDNESDAY 24th FEBRUARY 2021 between 10 am and 12 noon. Kindly note that non-perishable items can only be accepted. Please also note that SOP’s will be followed, so face masks, temperature taking and registration will be mandatory at MANZA. The list of food items required is quite extensive, so we have put below key items – again, that this list is the monthly requirements to feed the children:

Rice – 80 kg
Oil – 10 kg
Sugar – 10 kg
Milo – 15 kg pm
Fernleaf milk powder – 1.8 kg x 4
Dhaal – 5 kg
Evaporated milk – 5 tins
Condensed milk – 8 tins
Sardines – big tins
Flour – 6 kg
Babas fish powder, chicken curry powder, chilli powder – each 3 x 3 kg
Light and dark soy sauce – 3 large bottles each
Biscuit crackers – 1 big tin

If you are able to assist with a financial donation, below are the bank details for The Reading Room. There is also a contact number for Susie and her email address should you wish to contact her directly.

Let’s spread some Christmas cheer!

While the CMCO has severely limited MANZA’s activities in 2020, we are hopeful that we will be able to welcome you back to MANZA House on 10th December for a Christmas coffee morning. The MANZA committee will be providing some delicious Christmas treats (including mince pies!), along with tea, coffee, and mulled wine with wine generously donated by Asian Tigers. We will also raffle a lovely hamper kindly donated by Care Park.

You will all be aware how much charities across the country have struggled this year, and we would appreciate any donations of non-perishable food for MANZA-supported charity, the Reading Room.

To comply with SOPs we will require you to register your name and temperature on arrival at MANZA House, and wear masks. Numbers will be strictly limited so please RSVP your attendance to [email protected] (or here on Facebook). We understand that the CMCO may be extended and restrictions may change at any time. If required we will do our best to reschedule the coffee morning.

This event is a great opportunity to renew your membership or sign on as a member for 2021 – our special early bird membership fee of 200RM per family is available until 15th February. We look forward to seeing you soon!

RC Deaf Missions Malaysia needs Christmas blessing

As we all know, the Covid-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges for everyone, and particularly for charities which rely entirely on donations to survive. One of MANZA’s regularly supported charities, RC Deaf Missions Malaysia, is struggling to sustain their 14 year mission of enhancing deaf livelihood.

Christmas charity bazaars which are normally organised by associations like MANZA to generate income have been cancelled this year. Therefore, RC Deaf Missions have taken this initiative to showcase all their in-house sewn merchandise on their website for you to shop safely and comfortably from your home.

Everything you see here is designed and made by talented deaf folks. We hope you will find them beautiful and worthy as gifts to yourself and your loved ones. Thank you for your orders. Your support means so much.…/christmasblessing/

You can still support Pink October!

Pink ribbon

MANZA was sadly forced to postpone our annual Pink October morning tea due to the CMCO, but there is still time to support the Pink Ribbon Wellness Foundation and breast cancer survivors. We have some PRWF merchandise available for purchase – caps, socks, t-shirts (in quick dry fabric), keyrings, pins, and notepad and pens. If you would like to make a purchase and/or a donation – any amount helps! – please contact [email protected] and we will get back to you.

All funds raised will go to the Pink Ribbon Wellness Foundation, run entirely by breast cancer survivor volunteers. We appreciate all your support for this wonderful cause.

Pink October 2020

Join us to raise money for breast cancer patients and survivors at our annual Pink October morning tea. As always strict SOPs will be in place – wear your mask, maintain distance and record temperature and contact details on arrival. Attendance will be limited to ensure proper distancing so please advise your attendance in comments below or by emailing [email protected].
Some fantastic Pink Ribbon merchandise is available for purchase on the day, or you can purchase from MANZA House at our Mahjong, Bridge and Craft sessions during the week. If you can’t make it to the morning tea but would like to make a donation or grab yourself a t-shirt, hat or pin, feel free to contact us to make an appointment at the House. We always appreciate the great support of our members for this wonderful cause.

Stay safe!

In light of recent increases in COVID-19 cases across Malaysia, we would like to remind our members to continue following SOPs and keep yourselves and others safe – especially at MANZA! We plan to continue gathering for our regular weekly activities and other special events in the coming months, and the committee will do everything we can to stay safe at MANZA House.

When visiting MANZA House, please wear a mask, ensure you take your temperature and record your details on arrival, and wash your hands regularly. Keep a safe distance from others and avoid physical contact.

The MANZA committee and our partners at Malaysia Health Travel Council have decided to postpone the coffee morning and health talk scheduled for Monday 12th October. We will provide details of a new date for this event, as well as our Pink October coffee morning, as soon as possible.

Our weekly Mahjong, Bridge and Craft Groups will continue to meet at MANZA House. A reminder to all attendees that we have resumed collecting non-perishable food items for one of our charities, The Reading Room, and we appreciate any contributions you can bring when you attend these activities. Charities across Malaysia have been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and any contributions we can make will make a huge difference.

Thank you all for your support!

RC Deaf Mission Malaysia

One of the Charities that MANZA is very proud to work with is RC Deaf Mission Malaysia, founded by Agnes and Mario Peter in 2006. The Charity seeks to provide career opportunities for deaf people in Malaysia and change the perception amongst the general community of people who are hearing impaired. MANZA is a long time supporter of this very worthy cause.

Recently they have relocated their office and opened a RC Deaf Café at No 55G, Jalan SS 25/2, Taman Bukit Emas, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor Darul Ehsan.

If you are in that part of the world, please do pop in for coffee or try one of their delicious meals and let them know you are from MANZA!

Manza Charities and Crown Relocation work together for RKKA children

A big MANZA “thank you” to Kathy Richards who generously donated a fantastic wonderful great big sofa for one of our MANZA charities. As it happened, Rumah Kanak Kanak Angels (RKKA) has had “new sofa” on their wish list for a long, long time and were very happy indeed to accept this new (if slightly second hand) sofa.

And how, exactly, would MANZA get said fantastic wonderful great big sofa to Rumah Kanak Kanak Angels? Hmmmmm. Well, advertiser and supporter Crown Relocation to the rescue!

Penwiona Lee, on behalf of Crown Relocation, provided the truck for both the pickup and delivery of the sofa. Penwiona also graciously took some photos for us and reported that, although all the children at Angels were at school when the sofa arrived, Belinda (of RKKA) commented that, at last “the children would finally have a comfortable sofa to sit on!”

In fact, they’re now enjoying their brand new, slightly used, fantastic wonderful great big sofa as you read this article.

So thanks to Kathy, the good folks at Crown Relocation and to our newest staff photographer, Penwiona, from all the kids at RKKA!

Happiness Centre in need of funds

The Happiness Centre Melaka, visited by 5 MANZA ladies last Wednesday is in great need of financial help.

The centre is currently caring for 31 children and young adults who have severe physical disabilities, many have multiple disabilities including cerebral palsy, spasticity, intellectual disabilities, blindness, speech impairment and mental illness.

Many have been abandoned by their family or are unable to be cared for by their family. The centre receives no Government assistance and relies on donations to continue to provide optimal care for its residents.

Donations can be made by bank transfer to Pusat Kanak Kanak Terencat Akal Bahagia, Public Bank, account number 3108010508

Website Email [email protected]

The happiness centre is also MANZA’s charity for fundraising for the months of June, July and August.
